Established in 1895, MSES is a professional non-profit organization dedicated to investing in Minnesota transportation infrastructure professionals. With over 600 members spanning public and private sector fields, MSES members contribute professionally in Minnesota as engineers, surveyors, planners, technicians, administrators, sales representatives, contractors, and construction personnel. The MSES Annual Scholarship Program awards scholarships to deserving college students who demonstrate strong academic performance along with an interest in working in the Minnesota transportation infrastructure industry. Since 1953, MSES has provided over 1.3 million dollars to more than 900 college students. - Connecting and Engaging Professionals
MSES values the importance of connecting industry professionals through a variety of networking, social, and educational events offered throughout the year. - Developing and Growing Meaningful Relationships
MSES members improve their current industry effectiveness through camaraderie fostered by active event participation, volunteer service, and fundraising opportunities.
Qualifications
Students who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply:

- Any undergraduate student who is a Minnesota resident OR any undergraduate student attending one of the following schools:
University of Minnesota – Twin Cities
University of Minnesota – Duluth Minnesota State University, Mankato North Dakota State University St. Cloud State University Iowa State University Michigan Technological University |
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology
South Dakota State University University of Iowa University of North Dakota University of Wisconsin – Madison University of Wisconsin – Platteville University of St. Thomas, St. Paul |
- Junior or senior undergraduate class standing during the entire 2020-2021 academic year.
- Maintain an academic load of 12 credits per semester during the entire 2020-2021 academic year.
- Pursuit of a career in the Minnesota transportation infrastructure industry, including:
Government (DOT, county, city)
Private Engineering Firms/Consultants Transportation Materials Suppliers Contractors with Transportation Focus Geotechnical Engineering Structural Engineering Roadway Design |
Materials Testing
Water Resources/Hydraulics Environmental Engineering ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Transportation Planning Pavement Design Land Surveying (St. Cloud University only) |

- MSES Scholarship Applications must be completed online at mses.org.
- Current transcript must be submitted via the MSES Scholarship Application at mses.org or e-mailed to scholarship@mses.org
- All applications will be judged/scored by MSES Scholarship Committee volunteers based on a 100 point scale using the following scoring criteria:
Transcript/GPA – 20
Work/Internship Experience – 10 Activities/Volunteer Experience – 15 |
Essay - 20
Personal Statement – 30 MSES Feedback – 5 |
- Some MSES scholarships are provided by funds from the asphalt paving industry. These awards are based on an applicant’s interest in asphalt paving technology and enrollment at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. Please complete the optional final page of the application if interested.
- The top scoring applicants will be asked to progress to round two.
2. Interview
- Top scoring applicants from the following schools will be asked to schedule in-person interviews with MSES Scholarship Committee volunteers*:

University of Minnesota - Duluth Minnesota State University - Mankato |
North Dakota State University
St. Cloud State University University of St. Thomas, St. Paul |
*In-person interviews require a minimum of 5 students per school. If fewer than 5 students per school qualify for an interview, a phone or online video interview will be scheduled instead.
- Top applicants from all other schools not listed above will be asked to schedule phone or online video interviews with MSES Scholarship Committee volunteers.
- All interview responses will be judged/scored by the MSES Scholarship Committee volunteers.
Scholarships of up to $2,000 will be awarded based on the cumulative score of the submitted application and interview.

- February 3, 2020: Submission Deadline – MSES Scholarship Application and Transcript
- February 17 – February 21, 2020: Top Scoring Applicants Contacted to Schedule Interviews
- March 2 – March 20, 2020: MSES Scholarship Interviews
- April 13, 2020: MSES Scholarship Award Winners Announced
